Stillorgan was noted for large residences belonging to Merchant, and Professional families prior to the construction of vast modern housing estates from the 1950s onwards. These residences were located on substantial landholdings, entry to which was controlled by gate lodges. Although these grand residences have given way to modern housing estates, some of them remain. There are also a significant number of gate lodges still remaining, discretely scattered within the present housing estates. This illustrated talk looks a range of the remaining gate lodges, what mansions they belonged to and the prominent families who once lived in them. The talk also provides an opportunity for the audience to see how many they can identify before the presenter does.
