In November 1923 Hitler attempted to take power in the city of Munich. His putsch, which lasted less than 24 hours ended in failure. A decade later, he returned to the same places as German Chancellor at the start of the Third Reich. This talk examines the history of the Nazi leader in Bavaria during the course of 1923 and the wider national and international crises that made it possible. It draws from my book 1923. The Forgotten Crisis in the Year of Hitler’s Coup, described by the Financial Times as a ‘vivid crisp, impressively sustained narrative,’ and by the Irish Independent as ‘riveting.’
